A Brief History of Michelin Ratings
The Michelin Guide, first published in 1900 by the Michelin tire company in France, was originally created to encourage motorists to travel and explore, thus increasing demand for cars and tires. It began as a free guide with maps, tips, and recommendations for lodging and dining.
In 1926, Michelin introduced the star rating system, initially awarding a single star to exceptional restaurants. By 1931, the system expanded to include one, two, and three stars, each reflecting a specific level of culinary excellence:
Over the years, Michelin ratings have become a global benchmark for fine dining, representing unparalleled quality and skill in the culinary arts. The guide now spans numerous countries and regions, evolving to include recognitions like Bib Gourmand for affordable, high-quality dining and special awards for young chefs and sustainability. The Michelin Guide is celebrated for its rigorous and anonymous inspection process, ensuring unbiased and credible assessments.
