Legacies of Pride · Day 18

Ian McKellen

A Wizard & A Knight
June 18, 2026

One of the greatest actors of his generation — and one of its bravest advocates. Sir Ian McKellen came out publicly at the height of his fame, when few stars dared, and turned his celebrity into a lifelong fight for LGBTQ+ equality.

To millions he is Gandalf and Magneto. To the LGBTQ+ community he is something more: living proof that coming out can amplify a career, not end it.

A Master of the Craft

McKellen built a towering reputation on the British stage, earning acclaim for Shakespeare and modern drama alike, before global fame found him late in life as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and Magneto in the X-Men films. Knighted for his services to the performing arts, he has won countless honors across six decades of work.

Coming Out, Fighting Back

In 1988, McKellen came out publicly on BBC radio, in protest of Section 28 — a British law that banned the "promotion" of homosexuality. Rather than hurt his career, his honesty galvanized it. He co-founded Stonewall UK, one of the country's most influential LGBTQ+ rights organizations, and has spent decades campaigning for equality, visiting schools, and urging others that there is freedom on the other side of the closet.

Living Openly

McKellen has often said that coming out was the best thing he ever did — that his acting deepened once he stopped hiding. He has become an elder statesman of the movement, beloved as much for his warmth and candor as for his talent.

Why He Matters

McKellen showed that an actor could be openly gay and still play the most iconic roles in the world — shattering the myth that the closet was a career necessity. His activism, from Section 28 to Stonewall UK, helped change British law and culture for the better.

A Lasting Legacy

I've never been happier than since the day I came out.

Ian McKellen

A wizard on screen and a knight in life, Ian McKellen used every bit of his fame to make the world safer for the next generation to be themselves. Few have wielded a platform so well.
