Legacies of Pride · Day 1

Timothy Powles

From the Kitchen to the Closing Table
June 1, 2026 · Adam Timothy Group

Welcome to Legacies of Pride — our 30-day celebration of the icons who changed the world and the people living that legacy every day. We're opening the series with one of our own: Timothy Powles, an award-winning chef turned REALTOR who learned to lead with his whole self in one of the toughest, most macho rooms there is — the professional kitchen.

Anyone who has worked a line knows the truth: the professional kitchen is a crucible. Long hours, brutal heat, relentless pressure, and a culture that has long prized a narrow, hyper-masculine kind of toughness. It is not a place that has always made room for everyone. Timothy Powles didn't just survive that world — he rose to the top of it.

Earning Respect on the Line

Timothy's path to real estate runs through 27 years in hospitality. He began in property management before finding his calling in the kitchen — eventually rising to lead Raised Urban Bar, a rooftop restaurant in Chicago that was consistently ranked among the city's top rooftop dining destinations. During his tenure, the restaurant grew revenue by 400% and earned features on local Chicago TV affiliates and other media. His guests adored him.

He did it as an openly gay man in an industry where that was rarely the easy path. In a culture that often rewarded swagger and intimidation, Timothy proved that excellence, calm under fire, and genuine care for a team could command just as much respect — and produce better food. He didn't change who he was to fit the kitchen. He helped change what the kitchen could be.

Why the Kitchen Story Matters

Professional kitchens have long carried a reputation for a hard-edged, macho culture. Every openly LGBTQ+ chef who earns their station and their accolades on merit chips away at that — making room for the cook coming up behind them to simply be themselves.

Hospitality, Reinvented

The skills that made Timothy a great chef — reading people, anticipating needs, performing under pressure, and treating every guest like the most important person in the room — are exactly what make him an exceptional REALTOR today. At the Adam Timothy Group at Compass, he brings that same hospitality to every client.

As his bio puts it, he's "bringing hospitality to real estate" — and it shows in the lasting relationships he builds. Alongside his husband, Adam Stanley, Timothy also helps run AT Real Estate Group LLC, the couple's rental and vacation-property business spanning Austin and Puerto Vallarta.

A Life Built Together

Timothy and Adam have built a life and a business rooted in authenticity, never compromising who they are to succeed. In 2026 they celebrate two milestones: Timothy's 50th birthday and their fifth wedding anniversary — a marriage made possible by the very trailblazers this series honors.

  • Award-winning chef who earned his place in a demanding, macho industry
  • REALTOR bringing true hospitality to every client relationship
  • Co-owner of a real estate business that grew over 50% in the past year
  • Living proof that the rights won at Stonewall are meant to be lived, loudly

What His Husband Says

The numbers tell part of the story. In a short time, Timothy has grown the business several times over — from a handful of deals to a thriving practice, already well ahead of pace in 2026. But ask his husband and business partner, and he'll tell you the figures are the least of it.

I've watched Timothy build this business from almost nothing into something remarkable — growing it several times over in just a few short years. But the numbers have never been what make me proud. It's how he does it: with heart, with relentless hustle, and by treating every client like family. He's my husband, my partner, and the hardest-working person I know. I'm the lucky one.

Carrying the Torch

The icons we'll celebrate all month fought so that people like Timothy could simply be — to lead a kitchen, build a business, and marry the person they love without hiding. We're kicking off our Legacies of Pride series with one of our own, because that legacy isn't just history. It's lived, right here in Austin, every single day.

Follow along all June as we honor the icons, trailblazers, and everyday heroes who built the movement — one story a day.
